Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS)
What is MTSS?
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a whole child approach to provide targeted interventions and support to struggling students. MTSS supports academic growth and achievement, behavior, and social/emotional needs. MTSS grew out
of the integration of two other intervention-based frameworks: Response to Intervention (RtI) and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Instruction and intervention is provided to students across multiple tiers of intensity based on need. Staff make data-based decisions in order for resources (e.g., time, staff, and evidence-based strategies to reach the students at the appropriate levels to increase the performance of all students.
The MTSS Process
The MTSS model is a proactive approach to identifying students with academic or behavioral needs. Early assessment and intervention optimizes student growth. The key components of MTSS include:
Problem Identification: defining the goals and objectives to be attained.
Problem Analysis: identifying possible reasons why the desired goals are not being attained.
Instruction/Intervention Delivery: Developing a plan for and implementing evidence based strategies to attain these goals.
Monitoring/Evaluation: Evaluating the effectiveness of the plan.
