As a child Burks was heavily involved in his city's Boys and Girls Club, developing a love for basketball. As a High School student-athlete Burks was a decorated player earning an invite to Nike All-American Camp in 1999 and also represented the South team in the USA JR Olympics Trials, and was nominated an McDonald All-American before graduating in 2000 from Arkansas High School in Texarkana Arkansas.

This landed him a full athletic scholarship to Jacksonville Baptist College, in Jacksonville TX, he would then transfer with his Coach ( Patrick Smith) to Moberly Area Community College, in Moberly Missouri. After excelling in Junior College, Burks attended Stephen F. Austin State University. By his Senior year he was named a First Team All- Conference selection. TABC All-District Selection, and was named the Ralph Todd Award winner (Male Athlete of the Year) @ SFA. This would in turn allow Burks to be inducted into the Jacks of Honor in 2018.

After College Burks went on to play Professional basketball overseas in 4 different countries (Norway, France, Japan, Canada) for a 9year career. He also played 2years of Semi-Pro in Burlington Vermont, in the ABA where he won back to back titles, under the leadership of Will Voigt and ownership of Alex Wolff a Senior Writer of Sports Illustrated.

Upon retirement in 2013 Burks wanted to stay close to the game and begin coaching at a small junior high in Dew Independent School District. He would then be hired two years later by yours truly Rice ISD. He has since then helped the Boys Basketball Program win a District Title in 2016-2017 as the head coach and has also reached a milestone of 100 wins. In 2019 Burks decided to try on a different hat and was named the High School Assistant Principal, but still maintains the Head Coach position for Basketball.

His Family also plays a big part in the district. His wife Kimberly is now the Elementary Assistant Principal, his son Joah (4th grade) attends Rice Elementary. Son Jalon (6th grade) attends Rice Intermediate, and Daughter Saniya (freshman) attends Rice High School.
